Johnny is a higher education specialist with over three decades of award-winning experience covering a wide range of practice including: policy; communications; employability; strategy; teaching and learning; wider participation and fair access; student experience; student choice, recruitment and attraction.

He is currently Chief Executive of the Engineering Professors’ Council (one of the largest discipline-based representative bodies in the higher education sector) and Chief Executive of the Push, the award-winning outreach organisation (which Johnny established and which works in hundreds of schools and colleges every year).

He also does consultancy work and previous, current clients have included the European Commission, HEFCE, the Sutton Trust, BEIS/DfE, various universities (including Oxford, Cambridge, UEA, Queen Mary University London, and many others), The Higher Education Policy Institute, the BBC, Which?, and many others. Other past experience includes serving as a director of the Higher Education Academy, a career in the media and as a prizewinning journalist and author.

As a consultant, Johnny is available for work developing strategies (on, for example, embedding employability or on communications, marketing and branding), outreach programmes, developing web tools, and staff training. He is open to invitations to serve as a Governor.

Johnny is an accomplished and popular public speaker providing keynotes, after dinner speeches and award ceremonies and workshops. He appears frequently on the media as an education commentator and is a regular of the Wonkhe podcast. He also provides expert training in public speaking to individuals at all levels from senior executives to student ambassadors.
