Qualified and experienced consultant working with higher education providers and national professional accrediting bodies across the UK, Europe and internationally and working closely with boards, executives and senior leadership teams, often in highly complex matrix environments.

Expert in regulatory compliance, quality enhancement and organisational transformation, working from strategy to operationalisation with a focus on student-centric models that enable institutions to deliver their core value propositions.

Specific consultancy foci include:

  • Regulatory compliance and quality assurance:
    • OfS registration, Change of Registration Category and New Degree Awarding Powers application support.
    • Compliance with OfS Conditions B and E, including franchise and subcontracting arrangements.
    • Access and Participation Plan development, review and submission.
    • Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) preparation and submission.
    • Quality-assurance design, policy framework development, and governance-effectiveness reviews.
    • Mock quality and standards reviews and DAPs readiness assessment.
  • Strategic leadership:
    • Helping organisations and teams to design and develop strategy and operationalise strategy via programmes of work.
    • Facilitation of board, executive and senate away days and strategic planning events.
  • Organisational transformation:
    • Introducing significant institutional strategic change.
    • Undertaking programme portfolio and qualifications framework reviews.
    • Turning courses and programmes around.
    • Launching a new course or subject area.
    • Handling course, programme or department closure.
  • Strengthening organisational capacity:
    • Establishing a new role which will subsequently be filled permanently.
    • Filling a temporary senior vacancy.
    • Pedagogic development, including inclusive, applied and active curriculum, assessment and teaching, and the design and practice of inclusive learning support.
    • Designing and developing peer-network schemes for collective problem-solving and peer collaboration.
    • Inclusive staff CPD, recognition pipeline and promotions pathway development.
  • Mentoring and coaching:
    • ILM Level 7 accredited executive and senior-level coaching and mentoring.
    • Emerging and aspiring senior educational leaders.
    • Individual preparation for AdvanceHE PSF recognition claims (all categories but specific expertise in PFHEA).
    • Individual and team preparation for NTF and CATE submissions.
  • Research:
    • Karen is an active researcher in her areas of interest and welcomes opportunities for collaboration and to offer focused input.

Karen also holds active sector-facing roles as Lead Quality Assessor for the Office for Students, External Examiner at the University of York (YPAD scheme), External Accreditor for Advance HE and external reviewer for PFHEA applications at Oxford Brookes University and the University of Wolverhampton.
