Phronetix was established by Sally and Gavin Turnbull in 2020 to offer a wide range of support services to organisations in education, health, social and community fields. Our specialisms include strategic planning, research, analysis and service or programme evaluation. Phronetix combines Sally’s strategic planning, facilitation and higher education expertise with Gavin’s experience of undertaking research, evaluation, facilitation and consultancy with a range of groups and organisations.
We developed Phronetix with a philosophy in mind… we’re collaborative approaches that recognise and value people’s voices, skills and experiences within communities and organisations. The company name is influenced by the notion of phronesis or ‘practical wisdom’, drawing upon knowledge, skills, experiences, empathy and an ethical approach to discern the best path in a given situation. Our approach to consultancy is based upon recognising the knowledge and skills that already exist within project teams and organisations, listening to needs, drawing on our own expertise and knowledge, and working collaboratively to develop sustainable solutions.

Sally has 20 years of experience in strategic planning, the majority in higher education. Her work focuses on strategy development, using data to develop insights and inform decision-making, and bringing together multiple stakeholders to agree a collective vision and approach. She has worked with government and sector bodies, chairing the Higher Education Data Insight Group for almost 10 years. Gavin is a practitioner, researcher and evaluator with over 25 years’ experience of working with organisations, groups and individuals across youth, education, community and public health fields. With a PhD exploring risk and professional practice, Gavin has contributed to national workforce reform and has extensive experience of undertaking insightful evaluation with practical application.
